Conky is great but as with all informational widget type stuff, I think anyone who shows the desktop constantly is insane. I want the info viewable at all times. A tab group of 6 aterms brings us to where conky begins with top cpu hog, top memory hog, cpu utilization, 5 minute load average, ram usage, disk usage, up and down network speeds, and the weather. Artwiz for conky as well.
Transparent aterm with a gnu screen session + bottom screen "tab bar"

Most of the screenshot is related to a custom network appliance distro I made from Gentoo Linux. I also streamlined the whole development process for our product by switching all us devs to Gentoo Linux.
I'm pretty much an all around minimalist so Gentoo is perfect! =D

My name is Nelson-Jean Gaasch, I was GWN translator to french a long
time ago, and respond to the nick of JuPiTeR15 on freenode.
Details:
The window manager in use is KDE 4.3, with the Oxygen widget style,
ghost desktop theme, and a lot of greyish colors. (I don't use any
beryl/compiz/compiz-fusion, ... for the transparency effects, only KDE's
options).
The wallpaper is the right half of
http://3360x1050.com/images/3360x1050_desktop_wallpapers/places___nature...
(I usually use a dual display config, but had to turn down one screen to
meet the contest's requirements).
The visible programs are;
yakuake : On top with the "emerge|tail" command
kde 4.3 widgets for the weather report and calendar
xchat under it, connected to a few networks, the gentoo-amd64 channel,
and the bitlbee irc/im gateway.
Dolphin, opened in a similar mode to mc, with some transparency enabled.
amarok , playin some good'ol music
conky as system monitor on the right of the screen. I attached concky's
config, as well as the 4 scripts I used for it. I didn't write any of
those, don't intend to take credit for them and provide them as is.
Finally, the bar down there contains links to the most used apps
(lancelot replacing the traditional K menu), two desktops, running apps,
connected USB, system tray and time.
